Physician Training Program - Health Information Technology

e-MDs is the leading developer of clinical and financial medical software solutions. With recognition that a majority of expertise in the implementation of health information technology (HIT) rests within the vendor community we are offering a one year training program for physicians. The selected physician will gain experience by working directly on a wide range of HIT initiatives under the supervision of the e-MDs senior management team. This individual will be actively involved with the development and implementation of electronic health records (EHRs), health information exchanges (HIEs), structured data capture, evidence-based medicine, clinical decision support, e-prescribing, pay-for-performance, the Patient Centered Medical Home, clinical coding, federal programs related to HIT, genomic medicine, and related initiatives.

Background: A key barrier to increasing the adoption rate of HIT in communities is a lack of healthcare professionals, in particular physicians, who have the technical and operational knowledge to provide leadership for crucially needed information technology initiatives. At this time there are few physician training programs which focus on the pragmatic implementation of HIT in live practice settings. A substantial amount of this knowledge and practical experience resides within the vendor community. The goal of this program will be to empower physicians with the knowledge they will need to serve as leaders of local and regional HIT efforts across the nation.

This one year training program will be weighted towards ambulatory medicine. The trainee will work closely with e-MDs’ senior management team which includes physician and non-physician informaticists. Following in depth training, the person will be directly involved with EHR implementation efforts in physician practices, exposing them to how to evaluate and manage structured methodologies that encourage HIT adoption. This will include programs that encourage physicians to be compliant with HIT initiatives including those contained within the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (e.g., meaningful use and EHR certification), evidence-based medicine principles, pay-for-performance, the Patient-Centered Medical Home, e-Prescribing, template development, medical coding, structured data capture, interface terminology development, interoperability, and health information exchanges.

The individual will represent the company on one or more panels or technical committees that focus on national HIT initiatives. He or she will have an understanding of the basic principles of medical informatics and emerging trends such as genomic medicine. In order to maximize the operational effectiveness of this individual they will be exposed to the principles of evidence-based practice management and be encouraged to become certified professional coders.

At the end of the year, the physician will have a working knowledge of the advantages and challenges associated with the implementation of HIT in ambulatory physician practices and how it can connect healthcare communities.

Relocation to the company’s headquarters’ in Austin, Texas is preferred but not required. Prior technical knowledge will be taken into consideration but is not required. Fairly extensive travel to meetings and current and potential client sites should be anticipated. The annual salary will be $100,000 or higher, depending on the applicant’s level of relevant experience. At this time this program is not accredited by any university or other certifying body and should be considered an entry level position with e-MDs, Inc. that may or may not result in an offer for further employment at the company.

We offer a challenging work environment and a supportive management team. For additional information and to submit an application please click the "Email Resume" link below. EOE/M/F/D/V
