CMS Proposes Increase in Physician Fee Schedule

CMSPhysicians will see a 0.5% overall increase in Medicare reimbursement in 2016 under the proposed physician fee schedule announced Wednesday by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). There is also some reductions in the CMS proposal: gastroenterologists are getting cut 5% and radiation oncologists face a 3% pay cut while pathologists are the big winners with an 8% raise. The proposed fee schedule, will be finalized this fall and is the first to be issued since Congress repealed the much-maligned sustainable growth rate (SGR) payment formula in April. The 0.5% update was specified in the SGR repeal bill, known as the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA). The proposed rule also calls for reimbursement for physician discussion of patient's' wishes regarding end-of-life care. "Consistent with recommendations from the American Medical Association (AMA) and a wide array of stakeholders, CMS proposes to establish separate payment and a payment rate for two advance care planning services provided to Medicare beneficiaries by physicians and other practitioners," the agency explained in a fact sheet.
