Congress Approves Legislation Extending and Changing Medicare Programs

United States SenateThe U.S. Senate on March 31, 2014, gave final approval to the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 (the Act), comprehensive Medicare legislation reauthorizing and extending dozens of Medicare payment enhancements, but also making several substantive changes that will profoundly impact affected stakeholders, including hospitals, physicians and laboratories, to name just a few. The Act is expected to be signed by President Obama.

The following article provides a quick overview of some of the more notable Medicare payment programs that were reauthorized and extended. Each of the programs described is extended 12 months, through March 31, 2015, unless otherwise noted.
