HIMSS Submits Comments on Meaningful Use Modifications

On Thursday, July 17, HIMSS submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) on their proposed rule modifying the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive program. Specifically, the NPRM was introduced to provide flexibility regarding use of the various editions of certified EHR technology (CERHT), and offered the following options:

  • Allowing providers to use 2011 Edition CEHRT for their 2014 reporting period
  • Allowing providers to use a combination of 2011 and 2014 Editions CEHRT for their 2014 reporting period
  • Allowing providers to use 2014 Edition CEHRT, for those who are ready for their 2014 reporting period

HIMSS responded that they “recognized that the nation needs this regulation to provide time for organizations to implement Meaningful Use (MU) Stage 2 software” but went on to emphasize their commitment to “keeping the healthcare community moving forward on the path to interoperability that leads to information exchange and supports healthcare transformation, with MU Stage 2 outcomes and 2014 Edition CEHRT as important drivers of that progress.”
